As automakers face rising costs, low emissions and the development of autonomous driving technology, Volvo hopes to share its battery technology with other brands, including Japan's UD Trucks, Sweden's Scania and the United States' MackTrucks.

"When it comes to component development and production, we want to be able to cut costs in some way." Lars Stenqvist, chief technology officer of Volvo Group Truck Technology, told Reuters in an interview. "Not only truck brands, but also automobile brands and construction equipment in the future."

UDTrucks said it plans to launch a fully electric version of its Quon heavy-duty truck around 2020. Volvo had previously announced at the beginning of this month that it would launch medium-sized trucks powered by lithium-ion batteries for the European market in 2019 to complete tasks such as urban transportation and garbage delivery.

"It would be difficult for us to do this without shared technology and platforms." Douglas Nakano, senior vice president of UDTrucks, said. "Technically, we're ready."

UDTrucks' rival in Japan, Mitsubishi Fuso, a subsidiary of Daimler AG, began selling the electric version of its Canter transport truck to the Japanese and U.S. markets last year, and began expanding to the European market at the beginning of this year. Volkswagen's truck division also said it plans to launch a medium-sized electric truck for the North American market by the end of 2019.

After subverting the traditional automobile industry, electric vehicle leader TSLA has begun to extend its tentacles to the truck and heavy equipment industry. The company announced the Semi heavy-duty electric truck last year and plans to put it into production by 2019.

In order to remain competitive, more and more automakers hope to reduce development costs by taking advantage of economies of scale. Volkswagen and Toyota's truck division said earlier this month that they already have plans to form a cooperative alliance.
