Recently, American scientists have developed a new method to create a button battery, which is fueled by butane and can run four times as long as a lithium-ion battery of the same weight. When the power is exhausted, only a small amount of new fuel is added. The battery can be charged immediately. They also created another battery that provides heat from the decay of a radioactive isotope. It can continue to generate electricity for 30 years without adding fuel or maintenance. It is expected to become an ideal power source for equipment performing long-term space missions.
Ian Seranowitz, an engineer at the Institute of Nanotechnology (ISN) at MIT, said that tungsten is an important raw material for new batteries, and billions of nanometer-sized pits are etched on the surface of tungsten. When tungsten absorbs heat, whether from the sun, hydrocarbon fuels, decaying radioisotopes, or other heat sources, it emits bright light, and the emission spectrum changes because each pit acts like a resonator, releasing specific wavelength of light waves.
