The safety of lithium batteries has always been an important issue that troubles the industrialization of lithium batteries. In recent years, all battery explosion accidents exposed are caused by the use of lithium batteries. Compared with other types of batteries, this is determined by the special properties of lithium battery materials and processes. To this end, we should understand the knowledge of lithium battery explosions and try to explain it from the following three aspects.
1、 What is a battery explosion?
According to the national standard, any part of the solid substance inside the battery that is instantly discharged and pushed to a distance of more than 25cm from the lithium battery is called an explosion. The identification method in the experiment is to cover the experimental battery with a circular mesh, so that the battery is located at the center of the circle, that is, 25cm away from either side of the mesh. If no solid part passes through the mesh in the experiment, it proves that the battery has not exploded. Here is a specific requirement for "net": the net cable is made of 0.25mm diameter soft aluminum wire, and the density of the net is 6-7 pieces/cm.
2、 How to prevent lithium battery explosions?
All lithium battery explosions are caused by battery heating caused by short circuits, and the reasons for short circuits include overcharging, over discharging, direct connection of positive and negative electrodes, electrolyte leakage, etc. So, in the design of lithium batteries, the following points can be taken into consideration:
1. Prohibit overcharging the battery to 4.2V or above;
2. Prohibit excessive discharge of batteries below 2.75V;
3. Install an explosion-proof valve on the metal casing;
4. Prevent short circuits during the process.
The best way, of course, is to have a battery protected circuit board design. Although this may increase the manufacturing cost of lithium batteries, it is necessary for the safe use of lithium batteries, and all legitimate lithium battery manufacturers' products cannot avoid this design.
3、 Can polymer lithium batteries explode?
Polymer lithium batteries are a type of lithium battery product made of flexible packaging and polymer electrolytes. Under normal conditions, they will not explode during use and storage, unless they are short circuited due to strong human damage.
