If you have recently purchased a new flagship phone, you will find that the actual performance of the new model's battery is not as good as the previous model.

In the past few weeks, George Fowler, a technology evaluator for The Washington Post, has conducted the same battery tests on 13 mobile phones. Except for some exceptions, the battery performance of top flagship models this year is generally not as good as last year. The average battery life of iPhone XS is 21 minutes less than that of iPhone X, and the difference in battery life of Google's Pixel 3 is even more significant, with nearly an hour and a half less time compared to the previous generation Pixel 2.

At the press conference of mobile phone manufacturers, various technologies aimed at improving battery life were touted, including the use of more efficient processors, low-power modes, and artificial intelligence to manage the power consumption of applications. However, Geoffrey Fowler's test results, as well as the test results of other testers he has interviewed, reveal a publicly disclosed secret in the industry: lithium batteries in smartphones are at an awkward point, and due to the increasing demand for lithium batteries from new technologies, the overall battery life of smartphones has decreased.

Nadim Maluf, CEO of Qnovo, a battery optimization technology company in Silicon Valley, said, "The speed of battery technology improvement is very slow, with only about 5% improvement annually, but the increase in phone power consumption exceeds 5%.

The deterioration of mobile phone battery life can be attributed to many reasons, such as the demand for high-resolution screens and more complex application levels. The most important thing is that we can no longer put away mobile phones nowadays. Compared to rechargeable batteries in earlier years, the emergence of lithium batteries can be considered a major technological breakthrough, but there are still some physical limitations. For example, the battery capacity will continue to decrease with increasing usage time, and there is a risk of explosion if damaged or mishandled.

In addition, the usage environment of mobile phone batteries will also become increasingly demanding. The latest 5G wireless network technology will soon enter the US market, which inevitably puts higher demands on the battery energy consumption of smartphones.
