Recently, according to foreign media reports, two technology companies in the United States, Sila Technologies and Angstron Materials, have developed a new lithium-silicon battery technology and claim that in the next few years, this new battery technology can be put into production, increasing the battery capacity of mobile phones, cars, and smartwatches by 30% or even more.
The core of this new technology lies in "anode manufacturing". The current battery anode is made of graphite, while the new battery anode is made of silicon, which can store more electricity. However, under practical usage conditions, silicon anodes are often fragile or have a short lifespan, making it difficult to promote their use.
The prototype products developed by Sila Technologies have successfully addressed these issues. It fuses silicon and graphite nanoparticles, making the product more durable. Sila Technologies states that if the new technology they develop is used, the battery storage capacity will be 20% -40% higher than current lithium-ion batteries.
In fact, there have been many so-called "breakthrough battery technologies" in the past two years, but they often do not have such significant breakthroughs. Christopher Mimes, a technology journalist for The Wall Street Journal, believes that this emerging lithium-silicon battery is a real breakthrough. BMW, Intel, and Qualcomm are also optimistic about this battery and have provided support for the development of new batteries.
