Lithium polymer batteries, also known as polymer lithium batteries, are a type of battery with chemical properties. Compared to previous batteries, they have the characteristics of high energy, miniaturization, and lightweight. Lithium polymer batteries have ultra-thin characteristics and can be made into batteries with different shapes and capacities to meet the needs of some products. In theory, the small thickness can reach 0.5mm. So how do you understand the main safety issues of lithium polymer batteries?

All lithium-ion batteries, whether in the past or in recent years, including polymer lithium-ion batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries, etc., are very afraid of internal short circuits, external short circuits, overcharging, and other situations.

Because lithium has very active chemical properties and is easy to burn, when the battery is discharged or charged, the internal temperature of the battery will continue to rise. The gas generated during the activation process will expand, and the internal pressure of the battery will increase to a certain extent. If there are scars on the shell, it will rupture, causing liquid leakage, fire, and even explosion.

Technicians have added ingredients that can inhibit the activity of lithium elements (such as cobalt, manganese, iron, etc.) to alleviate the danger of lithium-ion batteries, but these cannot fundamentally change the danger of lithium-ion batteries.

When ordinary lithium-ion batteries experience overcharging, short circuits, and other conditions, there may be phenomena such as temperature rise, decomposition of positive electrode materials, oxidation of negative electrode and electrolyte materials inside the battery, which can lead to gas expansion and increased internal pressure in the battery. When the pressure reaches a certain level, an explosion may occur. And polymer lithium-ion batteries, due to the use of colloidal electrolytes, do not produce a large amount of gas due to liquid boiling, thus eliminating the possibility of violent explosions.

Most polymer batteries in China are only soft pack batteries, using aluminum plastic film as the outer shell, but the electrolyte has not changed. This type of battery can also be thinned, with better low-temperature discharge characteristics than polymer batteries, and the material energy density is basically the same as liquid lithium batteries and ordinary polymer batteries. However, due to the use of aluminum plastic film, it is lighter than ordinary liquid lithium batteries. In terms of safety, when the liquid just boils, the aluminum plastic film of the soft pack battery will naturally bulge or break, and it will also not explode.
