The charger receives power from alternating current (AC), direct current (DC), or can choose to use any of them. The AC charger has a built-in power supply that can be plugged into a wall socket, making it easy for the battery to charge anywhere there is an available socket. DC power is achieved by plugging the charger into the power supply or connecting it to the battery. This facilitates on-site charging or preparation when the power socket is not available.
Chargers are usually measured in watts. Calculate watts by multiplying them by voltage and amperes. The voltage of a fully charged 2200 mAh 3S LiPo battery is 12.6 volts. When charging at 1C, it will consume approximately 28 watts of power (12.6 volts × 2.2 amps=27.72 watts). As you might expect, charging at a higher C-level will increase the power required by the charger.
When purchasing the first charger or possibly replacing it, many factors need to be considered, such as input power, output power (watts), the ability to simultaneously charge a single or multiple battery packs, battery quantity support, balancing, and computer connectivity (for tracking and updating). Choosing a charger with an LCD screen is also a good idea, so you can easily and accurately change charging parameters and monitor the charging cycle and individual battery voltage, and meet the power requirements of your electric drone motor.
