Lithium ore is a naturally occurring and economically exploitable lithium resource. More than 150 types of lithium minerals and lithium containing minerals have been discovered in nature. The main mineral raw materials used for the production of lithium are lithium pyroxene (containing 5.8% to 8.1% Li2O), lithium mica (containing 2.2% to 6.45% Li2O), phosphoaluminite (containing 7.1% to 10.1% Li2O), diorite (containing 2.9% to 4.8% Li2O), and iron lithium mica (containing 1.1% to 5% Li2O), with the first three minerals being the most important.

　　Chile, China, and Argentina are the three countries with the largest lithium carbonate production capacity. In 2007, these three countries met 94% of global lithium carbonate demand. Chile, China, and Argentina all have significant lithium reserves, but they are all overshadowed by the Salar de Uyuni in the South American country of Bolivia. According to a report from the United States Geological Survey, the lithium reserves under the Uyuni Salt Marsh are staggering, accounting for almost half of the world's lithium.
