Due to the low room temperature conductivity of solid polymer electrolytes, it is difficult to commercialize them. The gel polymer electrolyte realizes ion conduction through the liquid electrolyte molecules fixed in the polymer network, which not only has the stability of solid polymer, but also has the high ion conductivity of liquid electrolyte, showing a good application prospect.
Polymer electrolytes are combined with polyethylene and polypropylene membranes to form polymer lithium-ion battery separators. Colloidal polymers are covered or filled in microporous membranes, which have superior performance compared to polymer electrolyte lithium-ion batteries without separators, such as: ① providing better protection during internal short circuits; ② Can reduce the thickness of the electrolyte layer; ③ Providing sufficient safety during overcharging; ④ It has good mechanical properties and thermal stability. It can be seen that polyethylene and polypropylene membranes play a very important role in ion battery separators due to their special structure and performance, unless there is a truly liquid free polymer electrolyte present.
