Charging Modes of Lithium Battery Chargers
Lithium battery chargers have various charging modes to ensure the safe and efficient charging of batteries. The constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) charging mode is widely used. In the constant current stage, the charger supplies a fixed current to the battery. This helps to quickly increase the battery voltage. As the voltage approaches the upper limit, the charger switches to the constant voltage stage. At this point, the current gradually decreases while the voltage is maintained at the set value until the battery is fully charged. This mode helps to prevent overcharging and ensures that the battery is charged to its optimal capacity.
Another mode is the pulse charging mode. In this method, the charger alternates between periods of high current pulses and rest periods. The high current pulses help to charge the battery, and the rest periods allow for the diffusion of lithium ions within the battery, reducing concentration polarization. This can improve the charging efficiency and reduce the likelihood of battery degradation. Some advanced chargers also have intelligent charging modes. They can communicate with the battery's BMS to obtain information about the battery's state of health, temperature, and remaining capacity. Based on this data, the charger can adjust the charging parameters in real-time. For example, if the battery is hot, the charger may reduce the current to prevent overheating. Smart chargers can also adapt to different types of lithium batteries, such as lithium-ion polymer or lithium iron phosphate, by adjusting the charging algorithms accordingly.
