Cooling uses new media Ricardo develops new LR6 alkaline battery

According to foreign media reports, as the automotive industry continues to move towards electrification, it is urgent to improve the safety of power lithium-ion LR6 alkaline battery. It should be understood that "temperature" has a great impact on power lithium-ion LR6 alkaline battery. If the actual operating temperature of the power lithium-ion battery cell is lower than the lower limit of the suitable operating temperature, its performance and efficiency will continue to decay, accelerating the aging rate. If the operating temperature exceeds the upper limit, it may cause battery thermal effects, resulting in battery circuit failure or even fire.

Power lithium-ion LR6 alkaline battery also have safety hazards when charging. When the vehicle is fast charged, the heat (heat energy) of its battery cell will increase to 3 times compared with conventional slow charging, which will lead to battery aging and performance degradation in the long run. At present, electric vehicle battery packs tend to use air cooling, and if cooling plate technology is applied, water, ethylene glycol or refrigerant must be used. However, there are restrictions on the use conditions of this type of thermal management system, which limits the charging rate or the number of fast charges that can be used per day.

Therefore, if the current battery cell technology is used, it is crucial to optimize the thermal energy of the battery pack and battery during operation. Recently, M&I Materials, a manufacturer of industrial and specialty materials, announced an i-CoBat project. The project uses M&I Materials' biodegradable dielectric coolant, MIVOLT, to test the concept of an immersion-cooled battery pack.

M&I Materials has long been committed to technical work in the field of advanced materials and electrical insulation. Its dielectric coolant is the company's core technology, and it has accumulated nearly 40 years of technology-related experience. This innovative technology will enhance power output, extend the life of the battery cell, increase the battery charging rate, reduce production costs, and help solve core problems such as vehicle range anxiety.

James OBrien, Product Group Director at M&I Materials, said: We are fortunate to work with well-known companies in the industry, including Ricardo (a global strategic engineering and environmental consulting company) who will bring its professional battery pack, battery management system design and thermal management technology to this project, and the School of Manufacturing Engineering (WMG) of the University of Warwick will send its research team to participate in all processes from R&D to commercialization.

Ricardo Chief Technology and Creative Officer Neville Jackson said: The core elements of electric vehicles such as power, performance, fast charging time and price have become key considerations to convince users to buy electric vehicles. New thermal management technology will be the key to encourage consumers to choose electric vehicles, which will help consumers alleviate or eliminate range anxiety and improve the acceptance of electric vehicles in consumersminds.

David Greenwood, Professor of Advanced Propulsion Systems at the School of Manufacturing Engineering of the University of Warwick, added: We strive to maximize the capacity of LR6 alkaline battery, extend their durability and maximize charging rates. Thermal management becomes a very critical link. This is not only a matter of ensuring battery cooling efficiency, but also ensuring that the battery temperature is optimized under all conditions of use.
