On the other hand, high-nickel ternary lithium-ion batteries have high volume and weight energy density, which can meet the increasingly high requirements of new energy vehicles for battery performance. From an industrialization perspective, the problems faced by high-nickel ternary cobalt-free batteries are mainly material research and development, battery manufacturing, and supporting application systems.

The use of cobalt-free batteries and self-produced batteries will significantly reduce Tesla's manufacturing costs, further highlight Tesla's advantages in the field of electric vehicles, and will have a huge impact on other brands in price competition. As for the cobalt metal in the battery, it is a rare metal and one of the most expensive metal materials in automotive battery materials. According to data, on February 18, the domestic reference price of cobalt metal was 277,500 yuan/ton. Therefore, the current cost of cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate batteries is 0.6/wh, while the cost of cobalt-containing ternary lithium-ion batteries is 0.85/wh. Therefore, it is not difficult to see that cobalt-free batteries have advantages in processing costs.
Cobalt-free batteries can not only improve electrical performance, life and safety, but also reduce costs and get rid of the dependence of positive electrode materials on cobalt. In the existing ternary system lithium-ion power lithium-ion batteries, the cost of positive electrode materials accounts for 30%~45%. Taking the 523 system as an example, cobalt accounts for 20%. As a strategic resource, the price fluctuation of cobalt will directly affect the cost of the final battery cell.
Taking the cobalt-free battery lithium iron phosphate battery as an example, the service life is longer. According to the full discharge calculation, the current cycle life of lithium iron phosphate batteries can reach about 2000 times, while the full discharge cycle of ternary lithium-ion batteries is about 1000 times. Therefore, longer service life is also one of the advantages of cobalt-free batteries.
