CCS Battery Powered Ship Specification and Regulatory System
Domestically, China Classification Society began researching the specifications and standards for lithium-ion battery powered ships as early as around 2010, carrying out practical ship application technology research, and transforming relevant achievements into regulations. In 2014, China Classification Society released the "Inspection Guidelines for Solar Photovoltaic Cell Systems and Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery Systems" (2014) to the public. In 2016, the "Code for Construction of Steel Inland Ships" (2016) included the technical requirements for lithium iron phosphate batteries. In 2019, the Technical Regulations for Inspection of Small Inland Ships were revised and included the technical requirements for lithium iron phosphate batteries; In the same year, the "Guidelines for the Inspection of Hybrid Ships" (2019) and the "Guidelines for the Inspection of Pure Battery Powered Ships" (2019) were successively released to the public. Compared to the safety technical provisions for lithium-ion batteries used in foreign ships, the latest "Guidelines for Inspection of Pure Battery Powered Ships" for the first time proposes the concept of safety classification and multi-layer safety protection, which addresses the safety prevention and control issues of different lithium-ion battery ships in a targeted manner. In 2020, the "Technical Rules for Statutory Inspection of Inland Waterway Ships" (2020) included the statutory requirements for lithium iron phosphate batteries. Thus, a complete standard system for pure battery powered ships has been basically formed in China.
