New CR2450 battery based on anion hybrid strategy successfully developed

Recently, Tang Yongbing (first unit communication), a researcher at the Functional Thin Film Materials Research Center of the Institute of Integration, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Li Zhensheng (joint communication), a professor at City University of Hong Kong, successfully developed a new CR2450 battery based on an anion hybrid strategy. Relevant research results "Hybridizing Anions towards Fast Diffusion Kinetics for Tri-Ion Batteries with Significantly Improved Rate Capability and Cycling Life based on anion hybridization strategy with fast diffusion kinetics, significantly improving CR2450 battery rate and cycling performance" have been published online in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A (J.Mater.Chem. A, 2019, DOI: 10.1039/C9TA03104A, HotPaper).

Due to its advantages such as high operating voltage, low cost, environmental protection and easy recycling, dual-ion batteries have good application prospects in energy storage and other fields, and have become a hot research topic among domestic and foreign scientists in recent years. Dual-ion batteries generally use graphite-based cathode materials, which perform reversible insertion/de-intercalation reactions of anions during charging and discharging. However, most of the anions reported in current research are anions with larger ionic radii, such as PF6-, TFSI-, etc. The diffusion kinetics of these ions are slow, resulting in the rate performance of dual-ion batteries that needs to be improved.

In order to improve the kinetics and stability of anion intercalation, Tang Yongbing and his team members Shen Jingshou, Zhang Fan, Ou Xuewu and others proposed an anion hybrid strategy for the first time and successfully constructed an anion hybrid based on Li+/PF6-/BF4- Multi-ion batteries. Electrochemical tests and theoretical calculation studies have shown that by hybridizing an appropriate amount of BF4- anions with small ionic radius, the diffusion energy barrier can be significantly reduced and the diffusion kinetics can be improved, thus greatly improving the rate and cycle performance of the CR2450 battery. The CR2450 battery has a capacity retention rate of 92.5% at a high current density of 15C (4 minutes of charging); there is almost no capacity decay after 500 cycles at a current density of 5C. This anion hybrid strategy provides a new idea for the development of high-efficiency and low-cost energy storage devices.
