Huazhong University of Science and Technology has made important progress in the research of oxygen reduction electrocatalysts for CR1620 battery

The team of Professor Wang Deli of Huazhong University of Science and Technology has made important progress in the research of oxygen reduction electrocatalysts for CR1620 battery. A simple impregnation reduction method and subsequent high-temperature treatment were used to prepare ordered PdZn (O-PdZn) nanocatalysts with a surface rich in Pd (5-6 atomic layers thick).

Clean, efficient and sustainable energy storage and conversion devices are bound to occupy an important position in the future energy architecture. Among them, CR1620 battery and metal-air batteries have attracted much attention in the field of mobile power sources due to their simple operation, high efficiency and environmental protection. However, the commercial application of such batteries still faces many problems. The most prominent one is that the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetic reaction rate at the cathode of the battery is slow, and the large polarization overpotential causes a significant reduction in the battery output power and efficiency. Seeking efficient, stable and cheap cathode catalysts is the key to the commercial application of batteries.

Professor Wang Deli's team is committed to the design and development of low-platinum and non-platinum catalysts and the study of structure-activity relationships. It is expected to analyze the structural parameters of the catalysts through theoretical design and advanced physical characterization methods, and combine experimental research to reveal the structure-activity relationship of the construction materials, so as to provide guidance and basis for the design and application of related catalysts.

Professor Wang Deli's team used a simple impregnation reduction method and subsequent high-temperature treatment to prepare ordered PdZn (O-PdZn) nanocatalysts with surface rich Pd (5-6 atomic layers thick). ORR test results in alkaline environment show that compared with Pd/C and Pt/C, the catalyst shows a 3-fold increase in mass activity. In order to better improve its cyclic stability, the corrosion-resistant Au atoms were modified in the catalyst by the strategy of spontaneous replacement. The results showed that the half-wave potential of the modified catalyst (Au-O-PdZn) was only attenuated by 6mV after 30,000 cycles. By assembling the prepared catalyst into zinc-air batteries and lithium-oxygen batteries for electrochemical testing, it was proved that the catalyst has certain practical application potential.

The research results were published online in ACS Nano with the title of "Golden Palladium Zinc Ordered Intermetallics as Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts". The first authors of the paper are Xiao Weiping, a 2015 doctoral student at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Yang Yao, a doctoral student at Cornell University in the United States. Professor Wang Deli from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology is the corresponding author of the paper. The above work was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, the Talent Introduction Fund of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the Youth of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, and the New Century Excellent Talent Support Program of the Ministry of Education.
