Japan develops "button cell battery cr1620"

According to a recent report by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan's Sanyo Chemical Industries and startups from Keio University are actively developing "all-resin batteries" that use resin instead of metal as battery components to avoid fire, which is expected to start mass production as early as the fall of 2021. This will catch up with the all-solid batteries and air batteries that are currently leading in the competition for the development of new generation batteries.

Sanyo Chemical will invest in battery startup APB. APB was founded by Hideaki Horie, a special professor at the Graduate School of Keio University in Japan. He once led the development of lithium-ion batteries for the pure electric vehicle (EV) "Leaf" at Nissan Motor. He also proposed the development plan of "all-resin batteries" that fundamentally prevent fire accidents by eliminating metals in battery structures.

Sanyo Chemical has the production technology of office multifunction machine toner and diaper materials, and will rely on this technology to produce gel-like resins as the basic materials of all-resin batteries. The company has cooperated with chemical manufacturers and production equipment manufacturers to establish the production method of all-resin batteries, and has started to supply trial products in the direction of mass production.

All-resin batteries are made of gel-like resin containing electrolytes, which wrap electrode materials such as lithium and serve as the positive and negative electrodes of the battery. Its characteristic is that even when fully charged, it will not catch fire whether drilling or cutting. The production cost is expected to be less than 12 yen per watt-hour, which is lower than the 15-20 yen of traditional lithium-ion batteries.

The lithium-ion battery that is currently widely used was developed by Yoshino Akira and others of Asahi Kasei in Japan, and Sony Corporation commercialized it in 1991. Recently, the competition around the next-generation battery has become more intense because the performance improvement of traditional products has reached its limit. For example, fire accidents caused by battery problems cannot be eliminated in mobile devices. In addition, if pure electric vehicles and drones are to travel for a long time, the capacity of traditional batteries alone is difficult to meet the requirements.

The new generation battery that is currently attracting the most attention is the "all-solid-state battery". TDK began mass production of the world's first ceramic type in 2018, and Toyota Motor and Murata Manufacturing are also vigorously developing it. However, most people believe that it will be officially popularized around 2030.
